Provide Housing For A Student

For over 25 years Penobscot School has been offering three-week English Immersion Programs for foreign adults each summer. The visiting students come from all walks of life—university students and professors, schoolteachers, doctors and other professionals, businessmen, policemen and firefighters, etc.—and are united by their desire to improve their English and to explore everyday life and culture of our community. Since the English Program began, more than 500 students have come from all over the world to study English with us in Rockland. With your help, we can have the pleasure of meeting and getting to know 500 more!

All of our hosts are volunteers who open their homes to welcome international students in the spirit of citizen diplomacy. Hosts are as diverse as the students. They are single individuals, couples, young or old, with or without children at home, but all sharing an interest in broadening their perspective on the world. Hosts also give students an important opportunity to engage in English conversation, typically during breakfast in the morning, after dinner in the evening, at the Wednesday evening “home night”, and on weekends when students and hosts are free to make whatever arrangements they like. Moreover, hosts are always invited and welcomed to join us for meals and activities.

Typically, students spend their class day at the school from 8:30 am to just after the evening meal (except Wednesdays—8:30 am to 1:30 pm). If they are staying near the school, they can walk, or the host can drop the student off in the morning. At the end of the day, we will bring the student back to their home-stay.

Summer 2013 sessions are scheduled for July 6-27, August 3-24. We ask that hosts participate in an orientation meeting on the first Saturday of the session. There, you will meet other hosts and become familiar with the upcoming session’s schedule and planned activities.
