Two Times the Immigrant Experience: From Indonesia to Maine
A Dinner and talk. Saturday, August 24, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Penobscot Language School, 28 Gay Street, in Rockland. The public is most welcome to this cultural and social evening.
Wiscasset resident and Indonesian expatriate Ina Demers will prepare a traditional Indonesian dinner and share her story. She will talk about how as a young woman born to Chinese immigrants in middle Java, Indonesia, under Dutch colonization, she came to live in Maine, barely knowing of its location. She will share with us her resilience which can be attributed to her “two times an immigrant’s experience.”
Currently, Ina Demers is a teacher of English as a new language and of the American culture to adults and children of all ages in the immigrant communities in Portland. She says that she has lived her life by calling upon the wisdom of the elders in her life, her own vibrant spirit in dealing with adversity shortly after arriving in the US, and an acceptance of serendipity. She enjoys cooking and is known in the Portland area for the delicious meals she prepares.
The “Ohh” Meal
