Passed down as a Spanish Catholic tradition following the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas–el Día de los Reyes Magos celebrates the coming of the three wise men in the Christian tradition of the birth of Jesus Christ. In many parts of Mexico, it is the three kings that deliver presents to children during the Christmas season! Perhaps they will visit the school (bring your kids!).
We will be serving the traditional Rosca de Reyes, a sweet circular cake, with a small plastic figure of a baby baked inside. Traditionally, the figurine represents the baby Jesus, and the lucky party goer who finds the baby in their piece of cake has to make tamales for the next gathering.
Mexican hot chocolate will be served, along with a demonstration, and even a song (in Spanish) to teach you how to make it! From the land that brought us the cacao bean, it only makes sense that Mexican hot chocolate is so delicious! There will be lots of other foods and treats to enjoy as well.
Although rooted in the Christian tradition, our Reyes Magos celebration is not a religious event—open to all faiths, ethnic backgrounds, ages, and anyone interested in learning about Mexican culture. Join us!
