We mourn the passing on May 15, 2023 of University of Maine French Professor Raymond J. Pelletier, our teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. In 1991, Ray helped secure a grant from UMaine to launch the first language immersion weekend, in collaboration with Penobscot School and UM Cooperative Extension’s Tanglewood 4-H Camp. In every subsequent French Immersion Weekend, whether at Tanglewood or Blueberry Cove Camp, Ray was a generous partner in this innovative educational endeavor, preparing materials for participants, teaching, playing pétanque, and even providing scholarships and transportation for UMaine students. He especially enjoyed his role as Chef and really shined when leading his workshop with students in the kitchen as he guided them to create delicious and beautifully arranged appetizers using ingredients and recipes he had selected. Above all, Ray understood deeply the value of total immersion in French and upheld the principles of activity-based language learning with mixed age groups, in an atmosphere of respect for every person, using humor and having fun. We will miss his energy, good nature, pedagogical wisdom, curiosity, and support and encouragement for all. – Julia Schulz, Co-Founder and Past President, Penobscot Bay Language School
